Visitors will admire the amazing scenery and so close to nature at its best.

The route is made up of a string of links between small, outer islands, taking the form of snaking roads and several bridges, And throughout the whole ride, you remain close to the sea. The structure of some of these bridges is incredible and it will come as no surprise to hear it was awarded Norway’s “Engineering Feat of the Century” in 2005.

In the past, there has always been a need by the locals to interlink the communities that inhabit the outlying islands with those on the mainland. The initial suggestion was some sort of rail link but these plans were scrapped in the 1930′s, however 40 years later, the idea was revived but this time as a road link to carry lorries and cars. With hurricanes being a regular problem in the area, the local workers battled through as many as 12 during the assembly of the road, which eventually opened in 1983.

The road is an extension of the existing RV64 motorway, with the Atlantic Road starting in the town of Kristiansund and ending on the island of Averøy, the furthermost point of land before the huge ocean begins. The bridges along the route are remarkable, and remain pretty close to the sea itself. Thrill seekers tend to head to this area in the autumn thanks to the unpredictable weather and the occasional hurricanes. A drive along what is often considered a calm route, gets tougher during the wild autumnal months as you battle the elements surrounding you. During the more tranquil spring and summer months, drivers will get a completely different experience and will be rewarded with magnificent views and more opportunities to get out of the car to admire the surroundings.

Fishing is incredibly popular in the warm summer months, with both visiting tourists and the locals setting up along the road. Nature lovers will enjoy spotting the bird life, and occasional seal; there are even reports that whales have been seen in the waters. Other highlights en route are the town of Molde and the Kvernes stave church which dates back to the 14th century.
